A Great Move
So, continuing my annual tradition, I just moved again. This time I only moved about 300 yards from a 2 bedroom to a 1 bedroom in the same complex. Again, I picked the best day to move: a tropical storm was going through the area. This makes me 3/3 for choosing good moving dates; my first move within Philly was a hot day that had heavy showers as we were moving into the new place; my second move was the hottest day of the year last year, and now I got a tropical storm.

*sigh*

Well, at least I'm done with the move.

Good Book
So, I've been reading a book recently (well, I'm currently in the middle of at least 5, but only one has been really active). It's an unusual book in that there aren't many books that can keep me reading past about page 100 without me saying that it's a good book. Around page 100, it was just getting started. Around page 300, it was amusing me with quotes like this one about Marine Sergeant Shaftoe:

Shaftoe likes the sound of [going to Sweden]. The perilous sea voyage through U-boat-infested waters, the collision with Norway, the desperate run across frozen Nazi-occupied territory, all seem trivial compared with the shining goal of dipping into the world's largest and purest reservoir of authentic Swedish poontang.

Just so you know Cryptonomicon is about cryptography, WW II, and only a little about sex to keep it interesting to mature minds like mine (*hee hee* I said sex).

Accomplishments
I feel sad that what I feel is my greatest accomplishment today was not throwing a $20k piece of lab equipment across the room. The same could be said for most days, but today is the first day that it felt like a great accomplishment.

I've been working, trying to do experiments for the past 4 months (the two previous months I was setting up lab equipment and protocols). On the exact day of the six month anniversary of my last experiment, I attempted another. It failed for semi-technical reasons (I did a little wrong, the equipment did a little wrong which equals no results). I tried again Tuesday and again today, and on both occasions, the same software bug in our old, crappy fluorescence plate reader reared its ugly head. I've spent 6 months that were mostly equipment's fault trying to do an experiment, and now what do I have to show for it? A software bug and about 15 minutes (out of 4 hours) of data.

ARGH!

After the failure, I took a 30 minute walk, and for the machine's safety, I didn't go back into the room with it for another hour (it's across the hall from my lab). Well, I'm going to be trying again tomorrow (with a couple of modifications (again) to the protocol to hopefully work around the bug.

Postcardy Goodness
So, if you want a postcard from Prague, give me your address (either here or via e-mail) and I'll do my best. I'm packing now, and I'll be leaving my apartment around noon. My flight is at 6PM (not 8PM like I may have told some people-- I didn't notice the 1 in front of the 7 on the time of the flight).

UPDATE: So, I was looking through my list of stuff I brought last time, and I was reminded of my journal. I'm bringing it this time, too. Thanks Amy.

Just in Time
I'm glad I found out about this spa before I head over to the Czech Republic... (not that I expect to go there, but swimming in beer has its appeal).

Kickin' Butt and Takin' Names
So, Emily and I were coming up with a list of names for characters with good kick-buttitude. The general idea was come up with a team who would work well together (no people who would only go on their own or wouldn't play nice with each other) for putting them in a room with another team and your team would be the one to come out alive. I set the limit at 10 people per team, but I was only able to come up with 5:

Jean Gray (X-men)
Bishop (X-men)
Gandalf (The Lord of the Rings)
Yoda (Star Wars)
Aahz (Robert Asprin's Myth series)

Do you guys have any suggestions on who I should add?

Fun Trip
Through a series of fortunate events, I get to go to a conference in Prague. Does anyone know good places to stay or see and things to do around there? I'm going a few days before so that I can enjoy the area.

Air Travel Advice
So, I am going to a conference in Chapel Hill in the beginning of May. To get there, if I fly Airtran, I will connect through Atlanta. To get back, I also connect through Atlanta. Flying in or out of Atlanta on the same dates costs $131. Connecting through will only cost $70.

Does anyone know what the consequences are for only taking one leg of a flight for future savings?

That's Hot!
Scientists have produced superheated gas exceeding temperatures of 2 billion degrees Kelvin, or 3.6 billion degrees Fahrenheit. They made the hottest temperature ever.

Some people don't know their conversions. Don't they know that 2,000,000,000 degrees Kelvin is 3,600,000,573 degrees farenheit?

I Feel My Brain
I just had a conversation about simulation with my advisor where I can feel my brain growing. This is the reason I'm in grad school.

The Cartoonists Answer
I think that the Jews have found the right answer to the Muhammad cartoon issue. An anti-Semitic cartoon contest done by Jews. I can't wait to see the results (both artistic and political).

Amazing Google
So, I gave Emily an iPod for Christmas. Today, I'm helping her update her music library's tags adding things like album names and album cover art. While doing this, I search google for

gary numan absolution

and it comes up with the album art, a track listing and some other info. I have now learned that google knows how to do so much stuff that I can't honestly think of all the things that it can do and I'm starting to not think it unusual that they can do everything. I searched for my uncle's address a while ago (I knew his name and the name of the city he lives in), and it gave me his address and phone number.

*sigh*

I wish that I were as smart as google.

(Not Really) New Pictures
So, I got off my lazy bum and finally scanned in several rolls of photos from Lancaster County, PA that I took two years ago.

Amusing Company
So, I've been getting back into technical analysis of stocks, and I noticed this company and I thought that was the best company name/stock symbol combination that I've ever seen.

In other news, my thesis proposal is on Tuesday at 2PM, so wish me luck that I don't get kicked out of grad school.

I don't know if this is good or not, but I feel happy that today the temperature will pass freezing (going up) for the first time in three days. I miss the south.

A Note from Beyond (the Border)
Hi everyone. I promised to post more, and well, whoops. So this week I've been near Toronto, Canada (Burlington actually) working on factory acceptance testing of a lot of robotics and software for lab automation. And tonight, I'm getting on my next to last flight in two weeks (home for Thanksgiving, here to Canadia, to Orlando, and back to Philly). It's been a long two weeks and I'll enjoy my bed when I get to it. Luckily I do have something to look forward to tonight: I get to see Emily.

Before I finish my packing of the hotel room here, I need to share this truism:

I am almost totally that way. I don't know some of the buildings immediately adjacent to mine.
